Welcome! The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international organization dedicated to researching and recreating the arts, skills, and traditions of pre-17th century Europe. If you've ever been curious about knights, archery, medieval crafts, or historical costuming, you're in the right place.
What Is the SCA?
Founded in 1966, the SCA has chapters (called “kingdoms,” “baronies,” and other branches) across the world. Members choose a pre-17th century persona — a historical identity — and explore the culture, skills, and crafts of that time and place. Participation ranges from casual attendance at events to deep historical research and competitive combat.
No prior knowledge or special equipment is required to attend your first event or practice. Come as you are and see what interests you.
The Barony of the Flaming Gryphon
We are the west-central Ohio chapter of the SCA, part of the Middle Kingdom (covering the Midwest US). The Barony has been active since 1979 and includes members from the Dayton metro area and surrounding counties.
Come to a Practice
The easiest way to get involved is to come to a weekly practice. Our combat and rapier practices are open to observers and newcomers:
When: Thursdays at 6:30 pm
Where: Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6430 Far Hills Drive, Dayton, OH
What: Armored combat and rapier fencing — loaner gear available for first-timers
The Barony also meets for business on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 pm at the same location. Everyone is welcome.
